Chordoma in Childhood Symptoms - Oren Zarif - Chordoma in Childhood
A case report involving an 11-year-old girl presented to her pediatrician with persistent headache. Physical examination and laboratory tests were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 2 cm mass in the caudal portion of the clivus. She had low signal intensity on T1-weighted imaging and a heterogeneously hyperintense lesion on T2-weighted imaging. She also had a strong contrast enhancement on FLAIR sequence on computed tomography. The findings on the imaging confirmed the diagnosis of a chordoma.

Surgery is the most common treatment for this type of tumor. A specialized surgeon may perform a partial or complete surgical resection of the tumor. The goal of surgery is to remove as much of the tumor as possible while keeping the resection residue away from nervous and vascular structures. While pediatric data is sparse, a recent study of 40 children in a multicenter retrospective study showed an improved overall survival rate and progression-free survival rates. Patients with subtotal resection had a higher survival rate than those who had total resection. Loss of BAF47 immunoexpression was a significant adverse prognostic factor.

While adult chordomas are generally located in the sacro-coccygeal area, most childhood chordomas are intracranial and are centered in the sphenooccipital synchondrosis. They are usually classified by their location, with the majority of cases involving the sixth nerve. In forty percent of cases, the presence of a chordoma results in headaches. The symptom complex is associated with long tract signs, which are caused by pyramidal syndrome. In children less than 5 years of age, the most common symptoms are a headache, an increased intracranial pressure, and torticollis. In older children, the signs of a chordoma include diplopia, isolated headaches, and pyramidal syndrome.

Symptoms of a chordoma can be confusing. The most common sign is pain, which is the result of a tumor that is growing outside of its natural space. When a tumor is located in an unaffected area, it will not grow back. The best option for treating a chordoma is to undergo surgery. The more advanced the stage of the tumor, the more likely the tumor will recur.

A chordoma can occur in any age. It can appear in any part of the spine and is most common in children under five. The most common childhood symptoms include changes in bowel or bladder habits and pain in the spine. In addition to the typical pain, the patient will have a fever and chills. The condition is usually treated by surgery or radiation therapy, and may be cured. However, a child's doctor will also have to monitor the child's overall health.

In some cases, a chordoma can occur anywhere on the spine. Most common places for a chordoma are the coccyx, the triangular bone at the base of the skull, and the clivus in the throat. The symptoms of a chordoma in childhood can be difficult to recognize and can be life-threatening. Fortunately, the good news is that a diagnosis is possible.

A child's symptoms will depend on the location and occurrence of the tumor. The tumor may be located in the sacrococcygeal area or the craniocranial junction. Its recurrence capacity is high. Surgical resection is the first step in the treatment of chordomas. Local irradiation and chemotherapy are not recommended. There are 250 documented cases of childhood chordomas.

There are numerous symptoms of chordoma in children. The most common presenting symptoms are headache, diplopia, and swallowing difficulties. The median age at diagnosis was 12 years. Several patients had local recurrent tumors. The most common procedures included an endoscopic endonasal approach alone or multiple surgical techniques. After surgery, thirteen patients underwent gross-total resection, and ten received postoperative radiation therapy.

In addition to a child's headache, the symptoms of chordoma in children include a variety of cranial nerves and a large tumor in the cranial base. The affected nerves may cause impaired function in the neck and jaw. In some cases, the tumor may cause a swollen eye. In other cases, it may cause a severe infection. If this is the case, surgical treatment should be aimed at preventing the spread of the cancer.
