Myelodysplastic syndromes are caused by a defect in the production of blood cells. People with these disorders have a low number of mature red blood cells and are susceptible to infection. Because these cells have a short lifespan, they leave little space for healthy mature blood cells. A low blood count can result in infections, anemia, and bleeding. Patients with this disorder may also develop a pale appearance or develop red patches near their skin. Symptoms vary by type of myelodysplastic syndrome. A complete blood count with differential is the most reliable way to diagnose this disease.

People with a del(5q) chromosome abnormality have low red blood cell counts. The number of white blood cells is low, and platelets are abnormal. One or more mature blood cells may also be affected. Because of the low levels of white blood cells, patients with MDS are at greater risk for developing other bacterial and fungal infections. A physical exam will reveal signs of disease, as well as check for infection. A complete blood count will reveal white and red blood cells and inflammation. A blood sample may be taken and analyzed under a microscope to identify specific types of myelodysplastic syndromes and leukemia. Your doctor may also perform a peripheral blood smear to detect any abnormalities in the bone marrow.
